A GEO checklist is a list of steps that help your content get picked, cited and mentioned in AI answers. These answers come from tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. This guide gives you 25 clear steps. You can use them to check any page on your website.

Generative Engine Optimization is the work of making your website and brand show up inside AI-generated answers. In normal SEO, you try to get a click from a list of links. In GEO, you also try to be the source that the AI reads, trusts and names in its answer.
This matters in India too. More people now ask full questions to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google instead of typing short keywords. If your page gives a clear and trusted answer, it has a better chance of being used.

We have grouped the steps into five parts. Go one by one and tick each step for your important pages.
Step 1: Answer the main question in the first 2 to 3 sentences : AI tools like to pick short, direct answers. Put the answer at the top, then explain it below.
Step 2: Use question-style headings : Write headings the way people ask, such as “What is GEO?” or “How much does SEO cost?”. This makes it easy for AI to match your section with a user’s question.
Step 3: Keep paragraphs short and simple : Write one idea in one paragraph. Use simple words and short sentences. If a school student can understand it, AI can too.
Step 4: Use lists, tables and steps where they help : Use numbered steps for processes. Use tables for comparisons. Do not use them just for decoration.
Step 5: Define key terms clearly : When you use a term, explain it in one line, like “Schema markup is code that tells search engines what your page is about.” Clear definitions are easy to quote.
Step 6: Add original value : Share your own experience, examples, screenshots, small tests or client lessons. AI tools see the same generic advice everywhere. Original points make your page worth citing.
Step 7: Back your claims with proof : When you give a number or a fact, name the source and check that it is correct. Wrong facts hurt trust with both readers and AI tools.
Step 8: Update your content and show the date : Review important pages every 3 to 6 months. Add a “last updated” date and remove old advice.
An entity is a clear identity, such as your brand, a person or a service. AI tools trust brands that look consistent and real.
Step 9: Keep your brand details consistent : Use the same business name, address, phone number, services and description on your website, Google Business Profile and social pages.
Step 10: Build strong About and author pages : Show who is behind the content. Add the author’s name, photo, experience and a link to their LinkedIn profile.
Step 11: Connect your official profiles : Link your website to your LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram and Google Business Profile. Also add these links in your Organization schema using the sameAs property.
Step 12: Build topic clusters : Do not write one random blog on a topic. Write a main guide and several related posts, and link them together. This shows that you know the topic deeply.
Step 13: Cover related questions : After you write the main answer, add the follow-up questions people usually ask. AI tools often answer in many steps, so cover the next question too.
Step 14: Make sure your pages can be crawled and indexed : Check that important pages are not blocked by robots.txt or a noindex tag. Use Google Search Console to confirm they are indexed.
Step 15: Check which bots you are blocking : Some firewalls and CDNs block bots by mistake. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search and Perplexity, check that bots like OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are not blocked. Blocking bots used only for AI training is a separate choice that you can make as a business.
Step 16: Keep important text in plain HTML : Do not hide key answers inside images, pop-ups or heavy JavaScript. Also keep your site fast and mobile-friendly.
Step 17: Add the right schema markup : Use Organization, Article, Person, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema where they fit. Schema must match the content that users can actually see on the page. Our step-by-step guide will help: Schema Markup Guide. You can also read the full list of types on Schema.org.
Step 18: Use clear structure and clean URLs : Use one H1, then H2 and H3 headings in a logical order. Keep URLs short and readable, like /blogs/geo-checklist.
Step 19: Optimise images and videos : Add descriptive alt text. For videos, add a short summary and a transcript so AI tools can read what is inside.
Step 20: Earn mentions on trusted websites : AI tools learn about brands from many places across the web. Get featured in industry blogs, news sites, podcasts and directories. To understand why mentions and links both matter, read: Brand Mentions vs Backlinks.
Step 21: Collect genuine reviews : Ask happy customers for reviews on Google and on platforms relevant to your industry. Reply to every review in a polite way.
Step 22: Take part in communities : Share useful answers on LinkedIn, Quora, Reddit and YouTube. Be honest, helpful and do not spam. These platforms often show up in AI answers.
Step 23: Link to trusted sources : When you mention a rule, a study or a tool, link to the original source. This helps readers and builds trust in your page.
Step 24: Test real prompts every month : Make a list of 20 to 30 questions your customers ask. Search them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. Note down whether your brand is mentioned or cited, and which competitors appear.
Step 25: Track AI traffic and brand growth : In GA4, check traffic from sources like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. In Google Search Console, watch impressions and branded searches. Some AI visits may not show a clear source, so also track leads and calls and ask new customers, “How did you find us?”
A GEO checklist is a list of actions that help your content appear in AI answers on Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It covers content, brand signals, technical setup, authority and tracking.
They work together. SEO helps your pages rank and get indexed. GEO builds on that by making your content clear, trusted and easy for AI tools to quote. Good SEO is the base of good GEO.
No. No agency or tool can guarantee this. You can improve your chances with helpful content, strong brand signals and good technical setup, and then measure the results.
Not as a must. Focus first on good content, crawlable pages, schema and trusted mentions. Treat any extra file as a small bonus, not a replacement for these basics.
Small changes like better answers and schema can show effects in a few weeks. Brand mentions and authority usually take 3 to 6 months or more.
Yes. People often ask AI tools questions like “best dentist in Delhi” or “which SEO agency should I choose?”. A clear website, a complete Google Business Profile and genuine reviews can help your business appear in such answers.
GEO does not need to feel hard. Start with your top 5 pages and go through this GEO checklist step by step. Fix the content first, then technical setup, then build trust outside your website. Re-check your results every month and keep improving.
